Argenis Mendez Keeps Hot Streak
Burning With Win Over Shamir Reyes On Broadway Boxing
Local Favorites Impress
on the Undercard
Argenis Mendez brought his act to the bright lights of New
York City, and shined through and through with a first round
knockdown en route to an 8-round unanimous decision victory
over local hero Shamir Reyes on Wednesday night.
Mendez-Reyes headlined the latest edition of DiBella
Entertainment’s Broadway Boxing series, in front of a
capacity crowd at the BB King Blues Club and Grill in Times
Square.
On an action packed undercard, the local favorites won and
won big. All undefeated, and from New York, heavyweight
Stivens Bujaj, middleweight Willie Monroe, Jr., light
heavyweight Joe Smith, Jr., super middleweight Phillip
Jackson Benson, and junior welterweight Gabriel Bracero were
all victorious.
Mendez (17-1, 9 KOs) was coming off the biggest win of his
career, a 12-round unanimous decision victory over Martin
Honorio for the USBA super featherweight title in May.
Against Reyes, who brought a vocal contingent of supporters,
there was no let up. After controlling much of the first
round, Mendez landed a counter right in the waning moments,
sending Reyes to the canvas. Reyes (18-7-2, 7 KOs) rose, but
despite not going down again, offered little in the way of
resistance to Mendez’s polished and balanced attack.
The official scores were 80-71, 80-71, and 79-72, all to
Mendez.
