Fight Night’s Twilight Saga

With the backdrop of the
Twilight Saga movie world premiere just outside the
doors of Club Nokia, Golden Boy Promotions put on a saga
of their own with a tantalizing card that had the fans
screaming ALMOST as loudly as the teenage girls waiting
to see the stars of their favorite vampire movie.
In the starring roles of
the fight card were an obviously human blood depleted
and weakened vampire victim who was fed up to Frankie
Gomez and a werewolf-like too strong and fast Gary
Russell who was more than any mere mortal could handle.
Let’s be honest here,
Welterweight Frankie Gomez (4-0,4 KO’s) was served up a
huge dish of palooka in Jaime Orrantia (13-26-5,4 KO’s).
Coming into the fight Gomez was riding a wave of hype
and no doubt the 1st round KO which looks good on paper
will keep that swell building. Referee Pat Russell
stopped the fight in the closing seconds and rightly so,
Orrantia who has been in some 40 fights needs to hang
his gloves up…El Permenente!
Featherweight Gary
Russell Jr (10-0,7 KO’s) demonstrated why his given
nickname “Mr. Russell” is one that he should most
certainly be addressed by.
Rodrigo Aranda (8-13-2,2
KO’s) was game but absolutely no match for the quick
handed and hard punching Russell…I mean “Mr. Russell” J
Russell dropped and stopped Aranda at the 34 second mark
of round 2.
Put Russell firmly on
the Pound4Pound hot prospect watch for 2010!
Welterweight Jesse
Vargas (11-0,5 KO’s) had Ernesto Zavala down in round 2
with a nice right/left combo that appeared to be a fight
ender.
But the tough and busted
up Zavala (21-5) got up and went on to give it his best
shot…to no avail.
The skilled Vargas
needed a few more rounds but at the start of the sixth
and final round Vargas pummeled the hapless Zavala until
referee Jack Reiss stopped the bout at the 33 second
mark.
In a scrappy bout of
young Jr. Welterweights Jamie Kavanagh upped his record
to (2-0) with a tough decision over Luis Sanchez (0-2).
It’s pretty clear that no one in the house knew Sanchez
hurt Kavanagh with a crisp right hand in round 2,
including Sanchez.
On second thought
someone did know about that punch…it was Kavanagh who
kept that punch in the back of his mind and never really
let go after that. Sanchez was tough but did not have
enough to keep Kavanagh away. Final scores read 40-36
twice and 39-37 all in favor of Kavanagh.
People started walking
out a little earlier than expected in the walkout bout
as Light middleweight Roberto Reyes (2-0) was given the
victory after a cut opened up over the right eye of
Clint Coronel (3-1-1).
The gash appeared to
have been caused by a butt although it was deemed a
punch, hence the early stoppage. After the bout referee
Jack Reiss explained that he had warned Coronel
repeatedly for pulling Reyes behind the head.
Neither Reiss nor any of
the judges saw the butt so by California rule, since no
official saw how the cut occurred, it must be from a
punch. Reiss added that if it was a butt it was most
likely Coronels fault.
