Williams Moves Up In
Weight And Looks Impressive
WBO welterweight champion Paul "The Punisher" Williams (35-1, 26 KOs) put on a few extra pounds, around 13 of 'em give or take a few, and then looked like a World beater when he promptly dismantled Andy Kolle (17-2, 12 KOs) at the 97 second mark in round one with a powerful right hook followed by a straight left hand. Kolle took the huge bombs and paused for a split second before crashing to the canvas as his night come to an untimely end.
After
the fight Williams said he wants to defend his title
back down yonder at 147 soon which must be a relief to
everyone at 160 pounds as Williams appears to be one
helluva Middleweight machine.
Also coming in heavier, in fact heavier than he has ever checked into a fight before at 258 ˝, Cristobal "The Nightmare" Arreola (25-0, 22 KOs) went to work right away and got a third round KO over Israel "King Kong" (boy do I love that nickname) Garcia (19-2, 11 KOs). After a first round that saw Arreola get tagged with a couple of uppercuts that wobbled his knees, "The Nightmare" went to work after that and within 2 rounds he dropped some heavy (take term literally) artillery on "King Kong" and the ref brought a halt to the bout at 1:11 of three. Promoter Lou DiBella told the ringside media that if his fighter Garcia could have taken Chris into round 5 that they had a good chance of pulling off the upset because Arreola was in no condition to go that far.
After
the fight Arreola blamed his excess baggage on
weightlifting and burritos, but rumors were also flying
around the arena in the Soboba Casino that Chris was in
no condition to take this fight either physically or
mentally and he considered bowing out of the Thursday
night battle. Gladly for Chris and his Southern
California fans, he came out on top and hopefully he
will be in better shape in his next fight as he makes
his charge for a World Heavyweight Title. |
