Time To Meet – Randy Caballero |
|
By Barbara Pinnella
There is a new young gun in the Featherweight division,
19-year-old Randy Caballero. If you go to see Caballero fight,
don’t stop to get a drink first. If you do, the chances are you
will miss him. He has had four professional fights, and in those
four fights he has fought the same number of rounds. His last
fight lasted a whole two minutes, way longer than his other
three, which went 0.56, 0.43, and 0.49.
But don’t even think that Randy has just appeared out of
nowhere. He told me he’s had roughly 170 amateur fights with 10
or 11 losses. Sounds like a lot of fights for someone as young
as he, but he started fighting when he was eight, which means he
already has 11 years under his belt.

Rodriguez Hungrier Than Ever,
Looking To Shine On ESPN Friday Night |
|
"HUNGRY". It is a term heard in boxing very
often. Before their first fight, boxers are often considered
hungry, hungry to get inside the ring and get their career
underway. After a few wins, they are hungry to then prove that
they are a legitimate prospect. After reaching prospect status,
boxers are said to become hungry to get to the level where they
are considered a top contender. Contenders have been known as
hungry in their quest to get a shot at a championship. It's
almost something fighters become programmed to say, but when
Star Boxing's Delvin Rodriguez tells you, "I am hungry" there is
something different about it. You can see it in his eyes, and
you can hear it in his voice. Just sitting down with Rodriguez
for a few minutes, or watching an intense training session with
the top rated welterweight, is all you need to realize just how
hungry he actually is. This Friday night in the main event on
ESPN's "Friday Night Fights", the IBF #3 rated Rodriguez
(25-4-2, 14KO's) will look to put that hunger on display when he
takes on Ashley Theophane (26-4-1, 7KO's) in a ten round
welterweight contest at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami,
Oklahoma.

Marquez vs. Diaz II Fight Week Notes |
|
Danny Jacobs, Robert Guerrero and Rocky Juarez
are always motivated to succeed when they step into the ring,
but this Saturday night, there is more than just winning on
their minds. The three pugilists are all fighting for loved
ones who have given them strength and encouragement in their
careers and in their lives.
Jacobs is dedicating his fight to his grandmother Cordelia
Jacobs, also known "Lady Bird," who passed away Saturday night
from lung cancer just months after being diagnosed. Jacobs was
already planning on dedicating his first title fight to his
grandmother, who helped raise the Brooklyn native and, as a
devout Jehovah's Witness, never actually saw any of Jacobs'
fights. With her sudden passing, thoughts and prayers are with
Jacobs and his family during this difficult time.

HBO'S Greenburg Says,
Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Negotiations Took Place |
|
By William Trillo
Speaking to the claim by Leonard Ellerbe that stated Bob Arum
might be lying in regard to negotiating with Ross Greenburg
about a possible Manny vs. Floyd fight, HBO's Greenburg said,
"Fights like Mayweather vs. Pacquiao are significant because of
these fighters' ability to connect with sports fans around the
world," said Greenburg. "It's unfortunate that it won't happen
in 2010,"
"I had been negotiating with a representative from each side
since May 2nd,(the day after Mayweather defeated Shane Mosley),
carefully trying to put the fight together," said Greenburg.
"Hopefully, someday this fight will happen. Sports fans deserve
it."

Alan Hopper (Don King Productions, Public
Relations Director) - On Saturday, August 7th, Don King
Productions will present a world championship tripleheader,
“Gateway to Greatness: The Homecoming” at Scottrade Center in
St. Louis. We’ve heard a lot of talk recently from other boxing
promoters wanting to present great top-to-bottom cards like Don
King cards, but nobody does it like Don King himself. Before we
get to the HBO Boxing After Dark co-featured main event fighters
we have on our call today, I’d like to mention that we will also
feature a domestically non-televised WBC/USNBC cruiserweight
championship. Ryan Coyne is an undefeated cruiserweight at 14
and 0 from St. Louis who played collegiate football at Mizzou in
2001 and 2002 before becoming a professional boxer.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. & Miguel Cotto
Set To Face Off In Puerto Rico |
|
By William Trillo
After Bob Arum announced that Manny Pacquiao
would face Antonio Margarito in November, Floyd Mayweather Jr.
made a trip to Puerto Rico and on the top of his list was a
meeting with Super Welterweight Champ Miguel Cotto. On the
surface it's reported that the two would sit down/face off and
discuss combining their 2 promotional companies to put on some
of their own promoted events.
One can't help but assume that the idea of the two fighters
meeting somewhere down the road won't come up in their
conversations. Frankly, the idea may be to both the fighters
liking now that their supposed dance partner Manny Pacquiao has
other plans to finish off his tear.

One On One Video Interview
Pound4Pound Hot Prospect: Gary Russell Jr. |
|
The main reason I put myself in for
credentials to The Pechanga Resort & Casino this weekend was the
fact that the hot Featherweight prospect Gary Russell Jr. was
scheduled to be on the card. Much to my dismay Russell Jr. was
moved to the Thursday night card in Los Angeles. Fortunately his
fight was televised and what he did to the veteran Mauricio
Pastrana was very impressive. The one round blow out speaks for
itself. As it turned out, Russell Jr. attended the show in
Pechanga on Friday night and we got to speak to the young man
that we are tabbing as the next sure fire hit in the
Featherweight division.

McEwan Remains Undefeated;
Gets Decision Over Perez |
|
By Barbara Pinnella
We returned to Pechanga for a Golden Boy Promotion event,
televised by Telefutura, and I was glad to come back at this
venue. The event was a sell-out, with extra seats brought in to
accommodate the fans.
There was a twenty minute delay in the start of the event while
the bottom ropes were wrapped with towels so that they met the
standard for the Boxing Commission required thickness. Hmm,
nobody was aware of that before hand?
The main event saw two Super Middleweights get in the ring for a
scheduled 10 round contest. After an extremely hard fought
contest, Craig McEwan (19-0, 10 KO’S) kept that ever-increasing
win streak alive against Danny Perez (34-8, 17 KO’s). The
victory was a majority decision; 95-95, 97-93, and 97-93. This
was met with a chorus of boos from the patrician crowd.

The Standing Eight Count -
Ringside at Pechanga for Solo Boxeo |
|
By Dave Wilcox
A sold out crowd of 2475 jammed the beautiful Pechanga Resort
and Casino in Temecula, California for a good night of boxing
action. This Golden Boy/Ringside Ticket promoted show was
originally going to be a Sergio Mora headlined card. When it was
announced that Mora secured a fight with “Sugar” Shane Mosley
for the Staples Center in September, in came a middleweight bout
with Craig McEwan taking on tough ring worm Danny Perez of
Carlsbad, Ca. as the new main event.
“Scottish” Craig McEwan hails from Scotland, and is trained by
Freddie Roach and fights out of the Wildcard gym in Hollywood,
CA. Coming into this bout, McEwan sported an undefeated 18-0
record, but never had he been in with such a seasoned veteran
like Perez. Danny Perez is a 14 year vet of the sweet science
and has been in the ring with some of the best, including two
fights with Antonio “Plasterito” Margarito.
